Students have dozens of hands-on exercises. It’s easy to fall behind. How can Skilling help?

Students monitor themselves

A timeline shows each student when exercises are due, plus the status of their own submissions. The timeline is on every page, although students can hide it if they need the screen space.

Exercise timeline

“Today” is marked on the timeline. A quick glance shows what’s due when.

The timeline can have a lot of data. How do students know how they should feel about their progress?

Skilling has an emoji in the toolbar of every screen. It gives an emotional interpretation of the timeline data. The emoticon ranges from a very happy face for students who are far ahead in submitting exercises, to a freaked-out face for students who are far behind. For example:

Sad face

I’ve heard a student say to another:

Not proof of anything, but suggestive.

Instructors monitoring students

Instructors get student progress data. They can sort and filter the data in various ways.

Progress report

The completion score depends on how many late exercises the student has.

Click “Send message” to, er…, send a message to a student. Instructors can type messages from scratch, or use message templates.

Message to student

Skilling has default templates, that instructors can change if they want to. Instructors can add as many new templates as they like.

Skilling shows students who are ahead, as well as those who are behind. Personal recognition can mean a lot to students who are doing well in a course. There are templates for those messages, as well. For example:

Good-progress messages
